The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
