A recent study reveals that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of appetite.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
